Activity: A Hunting We Will Go Flannel Board Activity

This book is chock-full of fun, interactive nursery rhymes that teach kids the names of animals and words that rhyme with them. Using this activity as part of my opening song in Story Time, I choose four rhyming pairs that match our theme for the day and put them on the flannel board. The younger audience in Toddler Story Time love to sing this song every single week. The older kids love to volunteer putting the matching pictures on the board.

Materials:

  • Template prints or pictures of the rhyming words mentioned in the classic story/song, “A Hunting We Will Go.” The pictures include: fox/box, duck/truck, boat/goat, frog/log, etc. You can add your version of the rhyming words as well. (Download Template A | Download Template B)
  • A variety of colors of construction paper
  • Velcro
  • Laminator
  • Markers

Instructions:

  1. Print and cut out the templates.

  2. Laminate.
  3. Before starting this activity, give the children a picture of an animal and lay out pictures of objects which rhyme with the animals on the board. As you sing the song, ask the children in the audience to attach the animal to the corresponding picture on the board.
